Got Books? Help Strengthen Detroit's Literary Community!

Starting from November 13, 2010 to April 30th 2010, it will be my mission for a year to try to collect 100, 000 books for the Metro Detroit Literary Community.

I know the impact of books in a home for a child and I want to give every home that doesn't have books in Detroit some.

This sounds like an interesting challenge and I'm asking everyone to help me.

Why?

I love books. My mother put that love in my heart way before I came into this earth and I'm blessed to have passed this love to my children.

Now I want to share my love with everyone out there who struggles to make a choice to buy a book or pay a bill in Detroit. I don't want to see anyone have to make that choice.

Plus statistics states even one book in a household increases the chances of a child graduating from high school*

If you would like to drop your book off in person, subscribe to this site (see sidebar) and when you see I'm having an event, come and bring your books to donate (while picking up a couple of copies of mine - although that's not a requirement).

REVIEW: "Essence of Motown Literary Conference" - Is there a Book in you?

Essence of Motown Literary Conference

On Saturday, November 13th, I attended the Essence of Motown Literary Conference at the Northwest Activity Center on Detroit's Northwest side. I was invited to attend the conference by it's organizer Sylvia Hubbard. Oprah better move over because Sylvia is a mom, a blogger, an author of 14 books, an editor, a self publisher, the founder of the Michigan Writers Network, and the owner of a literary radio network. Sylvia has been a very supportive follower of my blog and I was very pleased and honored when I received her invitation to attend this conference.

Is there a Book in YOU?
Even though I write as part of blogging, there is no way that I consider myself a writer. But the theme of this conference "Is There a Book in You?" did make me wonder what goes into being a published author and this conference gave me a brief, but very informative look into the business of book publishing.

During the conference, I met some wonderful people who were all at different stages in their books. I met the "want a be" writers who have not yet started a book, but really want to be authors one day. I also met the writers who have started one or more books, but have yet to finish any of them. Most of the writers that I met have finished their books and are in the process of getting them published. And this is where the Essence of Motown Literary Conference plays a role in educating writers on the process of publishing their books.

Education is Key in the Business of Book Publishing
Sylvia started the Essence of Motown Literary Conference to educate writers because she was sick of seeing writers being taken advantage of by predatory publishers. If writers are not careful they can spend thousands of dollars with the wrong publisher and have nothing to show for their money. This conference featured workshops and panel discussions on writing, publishing, and marketing. Writers could also get 1:1 help with publisher pitches, social media coaching, and manuscript critiques.

Book Publishing 101
Most of my book reading these days are e-books and Sylvia did a wonderful session on self publishing e-books. It turns out most of the same rules that apply to regular publishing also are part of e-publishing and there is precise formatting needed to submit a book to an e-publisher. One of the best sessions that I attended was by Valerie L. Coleman who is an author, editor, and publisher. Valerie's session called "Self-Publishing Made Easy Cash Machine!" was fast paced and delved into many of the aspects of self publishing from setting up an LLC and obtaining a vendor's license to how to get a copyright and how much to spend on printing. Valerie was funny, informative and a "trial by fire" expert in the area of self-publishing. She is also pretty darn good with branding since everything from her books to her business cards leads back to her website called PenOfTheWritER.com.

Relentless Aaron

A Brand called Relentless
The keynote speaker at the conference luncheon was Relentless Aaron. I will admit I did not know anything about Relentless Aaron before I read his bio at the conference, but I have to say I was impressed by how much he has been able to accomplish in the literary world dispute some very bad setbacks in life. Relentless Aaron is the author of 30 books that focus on street culture, most of which he wrote while in prison. Writing allowed him to be in his own world during his incarceration where he was able to observe human nature and routines as the basis for his stories. He took the brand "Relentless" to express how he planned to live his life in pursuit of his dreams. He spoke about how all his experiences built one upon the other and when he was ready to put in the work, how everything came together in the form of book deals, magazine publishing and television shows. He stressed that there is a book within everyone and all that is needed is the "relentless" drive to bring it out.

I totally enjoyed my time at the Essence of Motown Literary Conference. I love learning new things and I was overloaded with new information about self publishing. While I don't know if there is a book in me, I do know where to go to get one published thanks to Sylvia Hubbard :).

7^th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference & Jam

A Celebration of the Literary Arts in Detroit

DETROIT – “Is There A Book In You?” is the theme of the 7^th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference and Jam, hosted by the Motown Writers Network, in partnership for a second year with the non-profit organization, Detroit Impact. The conference is November 12 and 13, 2010 and aims to celebrate the literary arts with Detroit area authors, writers and avid readers.

The two-day event is an opportunity for aspiring and established authors and writers to connect with colleagues, peers and most importantly, patrons of their art: readers. Since 2000, the Motown Writers Network has served as a viable resource and networking organization for writers in the metropolitan Detroit area. This year is the organization’s 10^th anniversary.

“I’m so excited about this year’s conference,” says Sylvia Hubbard, founder of the Motown Writers Network. “The conference has grown so much through the years and this being our 10- year anniversary as an organization just shows that the literary community in Detroit is alive and hungry for resources. And that’s what we strive to bring.”

Presenting at the conference are such notables as New York best-selling author, publisher and visionary, Relentless Aaron and Detroit urban music author, Chris Campbell. The event will also feature literary experts, publishers for pitching sessions, workshops, and awards.

The conference host partner, Detroit Impact has supported the Motown Writers Network since its inception, according to Calvin Colbert, executive director.

“Sylvia and I go way back,” says Colbert. “Years ago, she volunteered with us as a young mother, bringing her children with her. She shared her dream to have the Motown Writers Network and we’ve seen her dream come true. So, definitely, we’re one of her strongest supporters. Writing and reading are very important parts of our programs at the Detroit Impact Center and we encourage those efforts every opportunity we can.”

For parents who want to attend the conference, there will be a Literary Kids Zone with activities for children and youth. Many of the conference activities are of no charge to attendees.

There will be an Essence of Motown Literary Conference After- Affair following the conference with Detroit jazz saxophonist, Yancyy and spoken word artist Brook Blander at 7 p.m. at the Rub BBQ and Pub, 18 W. Adams in Detroit.

Over the past seven years, more than 1,500 authors, writers and readers have gathered to celebrate the literary arts in Detroit and to strengthen literacy in metro Detroit. To that end, conference attendees are encouraged to bring teen and adult books to the conference, which will be donated to the Detroit Impact Center’s Youth Library and ProLiteracy of Detroit.

Recognized by Publisher’s Weekly as a “street lit phenomenon” and by ABC World News as “a one-man-marketing machine,” Relentless maintains a healthy blog that always informs and teaches the ins and outs of the publishing industry from a self-publishing perspective, as well as from the vantage point of one author who has created a brand that has been well-received and has earned global status.

The evolution of Relentless Aaron began in his late teens, when he began promoting concerts with Russell Simmons and Tiny Wood, to name a few.

This workshop will give an overview of the field of “intellectual property law” with emphasis in copyright and trademark protection under the law. This will cover copyright law including the definition, how are they created, who owns them, how can they be transferred, how long do they last and what happens if someone uses another’s copyrighted property. Trademark law will define what are trademarks and service marks, how can they be protected, and when are they not protected, who owns them, how is ownership determined, how does a mark receive federal registration, how to find out if a proposed mark is already in use by other businesses, when is notice to the public necessary, and what to do if someone is using your mark.

Dear Motown Writers Network Moderator,

I am working on a book called Kids' Letters to President Obama.

We are looking for letters from children ages 5 - 15, and I thought that this might be a fun activity for children. We're very excited about Kids' Letters to President Obama, which will be published by Random House in 2009.

Could you post a query about Kids' Letters to President Obama on Motown Writers Network? We think that parents on your group might like to have their child's letter in the book. This might help inspire children to become writers, too.

Children can write a letter to Barack Obama that is up to a page long. The letter can be about anything he or she would like to say to the new President. Letters could give the President advice, or talk about problems that the President should address, or ask Obama questions about his childhood or why he wanted to be president. Or the letter could be about your own child life and feelings about the future. In short, whatever kids are interested in is fine for a letter.
